Wallpapers in focus at Formex

A colorful tribute to Swedish printmaking

Formex celebrated 65 years with patterns, color and Swedish joy of form in focus. In the Wallpaper Gallery and Wallpaper Grove, history and the present met in a 150-meter-long wallpaper journey – a playful and inspiring tribute to Swedish printing art and craft tradition.

Tapetgalleriet

A 150 meter journey in the Swedish pattern tradition

Here, historical methods are combined with innovative design. Handtryckta Tapeter Långholmen shows how old original samples are brought to life in their workshop at Långholmen, while Lim & Handtryck carries on the tradition with classic rollers and deep knowledge of color. Lisa Bengtsson contributes with her playful and characterful patterns and Rebel Walls with large-scale digital prints. Boråstapeter shows the full breadth of its range, from collaborations with contemporary designers to iconic patterns such as Stig Lindberg’s Berså, which this year – just like Formex – turns 65.

In addition to these, names such as Norrviva, Duro, Sandberg Wallpaper, Midbec, Majvillan, Fiona Walldesign and Paintpart – which together gave an inspiring picture of what Swedish wallpaper design looks like right now.

Tapetlunden

Benedetta Crippa for Handprinted Wallpapers

Where the pattern walk came to an end, the exhibition continued. Here, a unique collaboration between Handtryckta Tapeter Långholmen and the Italian designer Benedetta Crippa was presented, with a wallpaper pattern developed exclusively for Formex.

– All of us who work with design must understand the history of both design and craftsmanship in order to create for the future. In Tapetlunden, together with Benedetta, we want to show how tradition and innovation can be combined in a wonderful way,” say Sara and Mats at Handtryckta Tapeter Långholmen.

The pattern is highlighted in a floating ceiling installation where visitors could step into a wallpaper grove. A place where you can sit down, take in the whole and meet the people behind the printed craft.
